2010 Met Ball Looks

Posted on May 5, 2010 · Filed Under celebrities

The stars were out at the annual Met Ball at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Tuesday night to help celebrate and raise funds for the opening of the Museum’s 2010 Costume Institute Exhibit. Between thunderstorms, the weather was humid and hair stylists were challenged to create glamorous looks that were not only beautiful, but also frizz-free. How do you think they did?

(Tons of Moroccanoil products were used! To check out my thoughts on Moroccanoil, click to see my review video.)

Rachel Weisz
Hairstylist: Mark Townsend

The theme of this year’s Met Ball was “American Woman,” and after seeing Rachel’s Oscar de la Renta dress I knew that we should keep her hair down and sexy. I started by adding a few drops of Moroccanoil Treatment to her hair, to condition and strengthen it while reducing drying time. This helped ensure a shiny, healthy look. Then I blow-dried her hair with a medium-sized, round brush.

When all the hair was dry, I used a 13/4-inch curling iron and rolled the hair from the ends to the roots in the iron. This technique creates more volume at the bottom of the hair instead of at the roots. When the hair was curled, I brushed it out with a flat brush.

To tame flyaway hairs, I sprayed Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray on the top section of hair and then sprayed Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray on the ends to fight the New York City humidity and frizz. This Spray helps to enhance Rachel’s highlights and creates amazing shine that will last all night. Rachel was so happy with the outcome of her hair and felt it was soft and sexy with a bit of a classic 70’s vibe.

Liv Tyler
Hairstylist: Hallie Bowman

With Liv, I went for a Bell du Jour look, with set hair and a little height in the crown. After washing, I sprayed the new* Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Root Lifter Spray Gel and applied the new* Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Triple Action Volume Mousse to achieve fullness at the roots to prepare for the elevated style. I blow dried with a medium round brush, pinning each section in barrel curls as it cooled. Then, I brushed out the curls and braided her hair back loosely, putting a band in just at the nape where I pinned a diamond wing broach. I set her hair framing her face in waves, like a finger wave, and sprayed a moisture mist (mostly water) to reshape the hair, letting it air dry until her makeup was done. To finish the look, I pulled out pieces of hair in a few strategic spots to make it look chicly undone and sprayed with a very light, brushable spray.

Zoe Saldana
Hairstylist: Mara Roszak

1. Apply TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Root Boosting Spray on damp hair and blow dry with a a medium round brush until smooth.
2. To give hair a lot of shine (to almost resemble wet hair) apply TRESemmé No-Frizz Shine Spray and TRESemmé Anti-Frizz Secret Smoothing Crème all over the hair.
3. Once hair is coated, pull hair back at the nape of the neck, slicking the sides back tightly and keeping a little height at the top. Secure at the nape of the neck with an elastic.
4. Spray ends with TRESemmé TRES TWO Hairspray, turn ends under to form a half bun shape, and pin underneath to hide pins, criss-crossing bobby pins for extra security.
5. Finally, spray hairspray on fingertips and gently pull the hair on top to give it a slightly textured look. Finish entire look with hairspray for an all-night hold.

Sienna Miller
Hairstylist: John D.

Sienna Miller made a dramatic entrance wearing a stunning navy blue Emilio Pucci gown. The hair, created by celebrity stylist John D. was strongly inspired by the classic, sensual beauty of Brigitte Bardot.

According to John D., I first prepped her slightly damp hair with Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream, applying a small amount on the palm of my hand then finger-combing it throughout the hair. I used it to hydrate and protect the hair as well as helping to counteract the humidity in the air and prevent frizz.

Next I did a super-clean, simple blowout using a flat bristle brush. I wanted to smooth out any natural wave yet still leave a bit of volume at the root.

After the hair was dry, I decided on a messy center part, then pulled back the front part of hair, and fastened half into an undone half-upstyle. I left a bit of volume at the crown so it would look slightly messy, yet classically Bardot.

The weather was very humid in New York this evening and the red carpet happened between rainstorms, so I had to rely on a spray I could trust to keep her style in place and under control. So I finished the look with new Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray, which is strong enough to keep the style in place and tame frizz, but soft enough to make sure Sienna’s hair looked natural and beautiful.

Kate Hudson
Hairstylist: David Babaii

Inspiration: A day spent sun-bathing in San Tropez

The look: Elegant yet flirty, not too coiffed but still full of body and texture.

How to get the look: David Babaii used Living Proof Full to give Kate Hudson’s fine, limp blonde hair a thicker feel. He rubbed the product between his fingers to activate the ingredients and applied FULL from root to shaft. He rough dried the entire head to add additional volume. He then created a side part and formed a braid along the side of her face. He gathered all the hair back into a low bun at the nape of the neck, pulling the braid back with the rest, creating a sexy, cool up-do.

Babaii said, “Usually I am afraid to braid Kate’s hair because it is so fine, but Living Proof Full added the dimension and depth I needed to create this fabulous red carpet look.”

Gwen Stefani
Hairstylist: Danilo

Gwen’s dress was made from a gold, vintage thread fabric from the 30’s, and we wanted to honor the ethereal flow by creating a chic silhouette from head to toe. I created a dramatic, contemporary twist inspired by Grace Kelly and the Hitchcock film goddesses.

After washing her hair for a clean base, I applied the new* Pantene Pro-V Color Nourishing Treatment, left it in for 5 minutes, and rinsed. I always opt to treat hair before a night of styling, especially on color-treated hair, so it is soft and appears in its healthiest form for the lights and cameras. On her wet hair, I evenly spritzed the new* Pantene Pro-V Medium-Thick Heat Protection & Shine Spray to prep for the blow dry. Midway through, I focused on her roots by spraying them with the Pantene Pro-V Root Lifter Spray Gel to help thicken her roots to support the grand bouffant. After blow drying, I pulled all of her hair back, pinning hair in place to create the lift, and used my fingers to form piecey rows on the top of her hair so it wasn’t perfectly smooth. To finish the look, I used the new* Pantene Pro-V Medium-Thick Anti-Humidity Hairspray to keep her hair frizz-free in the horrible NYC humidity.

Claire Danes
Hairstylist: Peter Butler

Claire Danes looked exceptional in a strapless slate-grey gown by Christopher Bailey for Burberry, with a hair look that highlighted her elegant pale blonde color with natural-looking polished and textured waves.

According to stylist Peter Butler, the look was elegant with a luxurious rock-and-roll edge. I created a higher part than Claire usually wears to open up her face and created smooth, flowing waves that looked tousled yet sophisticated. It’s almost like a modern version of combed out beach waves with a refined texture.

I first applied a dry shampoo at the roots for volume, then used new argan oil-infused Moroccanoil Light to smooth and hydrate strands, reduce frizz, and help prepare and protect hair before using a curling iron. Next, I used a medium barrel curling iron, picking up small sections starting at the nape of the neck, twisting hair around while leaving ends straight. After combing curls out with a wide-tooth comb, I adjusted the texture with my hands and brought them forward to soften the face.

Once I had the look, I used a bit more Moroccanoil Light to further smooth out ends and help prevent frizz because the air in New York tonight was quite humid. I finished with a light mist of Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray followed by Luminous Hair Spray for a hold that looked natural and allowed hair to move.

Katy Perry
Hairstylist: Danilo

Katy’s been incredibly fun to work with this year because she loves to experiment with varied retro styles while still keeping the charm of old-school glamour. The look I created tonight was very 50’s Liz Taylor, hair pulled off the face with a sea of black waves.

To style her classic glamour set, I first started by washing hair with a clean base. Then, I sprayed hair with the new* Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Detangler to condition hair with a silky finish before the blow dry. I used both a round brush and finger tousles to create the glamour waves, then lightly sprayed them with new* Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Touchable Hairspray for a finishing hold. The front of Katy’s hair was simply pulled to the side, twisted, and pinned in place. Katy’s dress was made specifically for her, so I wanted to make sure that her hair was just as flashing (literally) as the dress.

Mila Kunis
Hairstylist: Mara Roszak

1. Apply TRESemmé Naturals Finishing Spray to dry hair and rough dry, enhancing the natural texture.
2. Curl random pieces of hair around the face and throughout the head.
3. Apply a dab of TRESemmé Fresh Start No-Frizz Crème to palms of hands and run through hair. Then, loosely grab three sections of hair, starting at the crown and start a french braid.
4. Get about half way down the head and secure with bobby pins, leaving out the bottom section of hair.
5. Pin up all the hair into a messy bun, criss-crossing the pins, and finish with TRESemmé TRES TWO Hairspray.
