Requesting your brains

Posted on June 2, 2008 · Filed Under stuff

The HT waiting list is a little loooong, so I’m trying to figure out ways to reduce the overall waiting time. Of course, the obvious choice is to complete more per week. Hold me.

However, I recently hired a babysitter to watch Wito so I can work on my “internet endeavors”. (Hair Thursday + Increased Popularity = Whoorl Losing Money. What is WRONG with that equation?)

Anyhoo, over here at Whoorl Type A Headquarters, I’ve completed a little time management audit. It seems that the most time-consuming sections of my posts are the ones involving writing. Imagine that.

Tell me honestly, how important are my opinions involving why I choose the hairstyles and/or styling advice? In the past, I’ve assumed that you all are interested in that information, but now I wonder if I’m just a conceited boob. Do you all care about the content, besides the photos and poll? Or is it really just the hairstyles that you all are interested in seeing?

Here’s what I’m thinking. If the majority of you are mainly interested in the photos and polls, I could cut out most of the writing besides the basic information (which could leave more time for my scientific theories and/or inane bullshit over at whoorl. Scary.) and increase the participants to four a week, therefore cutting the waiting time in half. OR if you like it the way it is, I won’t change a thing.

I’m perfectly content either way, so be completely honest. THE FUTURE OF HAIR THURSDAY IS IN YOUR CAPABLE HANDS.

I want a third option- more participants and less writing but not NO writing. Because I come here for your wit and words not just pretty pictures but I get why you might need to add more each week.

    Compromise?

I think that is what I meant. There would be some writing (maybe a paragraph or two?) besides the basic information, but just not the 5-6 paragraph diatribes I’m sometimes capable of producing.

  2. Angella on June 2nd, 2008 8:04 pm

I’m with Sizzle. She’s one smart cookie, like you. ;)

  3. Mandee on June 2nd, 2008 8:10 pm

I think you’re writing is key. This is going to sound totally hokey, but I have really learned more about my hair since you started this little endeavor than I learned in the previous 32 years. I’m one of those who knows what I like when I see it, but I’ve never been able to verbalize it. You give me the language to communicate with my stylist.

  4. Jeanmarie on June 2nd, 2008 8:16 pm

The voting thing seems to be Out Of Order at the moment, but I read your blog for you – your wit, your writing sytle, your opinion. If I just wanted to vote based on pictures, I would be perusing Hot or Not :-)

  5. amy Harmon on June 2nd, 2008 8:19 pm

i understand it takes you hours probably for every hair thursday. but your writing is what makes us all come back for more. not only are you informative and uber knowledgable you are so very entertaining.
i say….wait your turn hair waiting list folks.
    carry on whoorl!

  6. Jummy on June 2nd, 2008 8:21 pm

I like your commentary too so I guess if shortening the waiting list is a goal, sizzle’s compromise sounds great.

  7. Megan on June 2nd, 2008 8:21 pm

I voted for more participants, mostly because I’m a greedy greeder and plan to sign up soon! (And I know the list is full until like, 2010.) I’ll definitely be happy no matter how you do it though, I love me some Hair Thursday. :)

  8. Aimee Greeblemonkey on June 2nd, 2008 8:22 pm

I’m all about the Whoorl. People just need to wait for the awesomeness.

  9. Michelle on June 2nd, 2008 8:23 pm

I love your writing (here and at Whoorl.com)! The guidance you offer here is very valuable, and your sense of humor is stellar! It’s why we all visit! Keep things the way they are :o )

  10. cameron on June 2nd, 2008 8:23 pm

For style ideas on individuals? Photo heavy, less content.

BUT I lurve your instructions on hair techniques, including dummies-guide-to-hair with pictures, and your product recommendations. Please don’t get rid of that!

  11. Gretchen on June 2nd, 2008 8:37 pm

I usually couldn’t care less what the polls say. I’m here for your expert advice. Especially when a lot of the polls come out awfully close to 50/50 (like mine did). I have learned SO much more from your detailed writing that I feel like I need to update my previous Hair Thursday update cuz my hair has improved even more! It’s all about YOU girl, not the polls.

  12. andrea on June 2nd, 2008 8:37 pm

I think you could get away with a little less writing, but I really do love your descriptions and it is helpful to have all that info when voting on these lovely ladies hair.

I think those of us on your waiting list can just be patient, I have a feeling it will be worth the wait!

  13. Shannon on June 2nd, 2008 8:57 pm

I’m a fan of the detailed writing! Not only is it fun, it’s pretty much my main source of hair-related knowledge and info. I’d be lost without it!

  14. lisa on June 2nd, 2008 9:02 pm

Ok..I voted for less writing but NOT cuz I dont enjoy it…I DO I REALLY DO but I want more writing @ whoorl.com tooooooo:) so whatever will work best;) kinda sounds like EVERYONE JUST loves YOU and your writing….:)

  15. Velma on June 2nd, 2008 9:13 pm

What about a multi-level sort of thing, where you posted several poll-only things each week and the closest votes/most comments/most interesting challenges got an entry at the end of the week?

More people get feedback, we still get to read your great commentary, and it stays interesting by having multiple polls each week?

  16. Cassandra on June 2nd, 2008 9:17 pm

Noooooo! I loves me the commentary! Seeing how you get to your decisions helps me, since I’ll never ever be a hair thursday girl… what with the enormous waiting list. :)

  17. Barb @ getupandplay on June 2nd, 2008 9:24 pm

    I agree with Sizzle!!

  18. Jill - GlossyVeneer on June 2nd, 2008 9:27 pm

I think your insight is very important. Based on information I’ve gathered on this site I’ve gained:
    1) a smokin’ new hairdo
    2) a great flat iron (recommendations you made to others)
    3) a great hair dryer (links provided on your site)
    4) some great products

But I totally understand the need to find a balance in this! I think we’ll all support you in whatever you choose.

  19. Keely on June 2nd, 2008 10:03 pm

I love your writing along with the pretty pictures! I’ve learned so much about hair, now I just need to put the knowledge in practice haha.

  20. Kindra on June 2nd, 2008 10:12 pm

I love your commentary. I learn so much from them.

  21. margalit on June 2nd, 2008 10:41 pm

The writing has been really good for this ponytail mom that uses no products. I’ve learned to straighten my hair with a flatiron and blow dry it so it won’t frizz. People like me NEED the content. We evidentially were born without the hair gene or something.

But there is one teeny tiny thing that would make me happy. Instead of using celeb hairdos, could you use more regular people, maybe the hair models in magazines or something. Because let’s face it, we’re never gonna look like the celebs. Or at least I’m not going to.

  22. Blythe on June 3rd, 2008 1:45 am

More people, less writing is OK with me. I’ll miss your wit, but if I can get more of that at Whoorl, then that works for me.

  23. Hanna on June 3rd, 2008 2:44 am

    Ditto to sizzle!

  24. Lauri on June 3rd, 2008 5:33 am

as someone on the waiting list, I say less writing but I do enjoy your personal feedback and have learned from it. Maybe you can find a happy medium and work me up the list already… it is June.

  25. Lin on June 3rd, 2008 7:53 am

Am I the only one who wants MORE participants and MORE commentary? Have they perfected human cloning yet?

  26. martymankins on June 3rd, 2008 7:54 am

I wouldn’t mind seeing more participants, but at the same time, the format you have now does seem to work well. Tough call.

  27. giselle on June 3rd, 2008 8:19 am

Ahh! So hard. I love your writing, so I don’t want you to do away with it, just like everyone else. More participants and more writing over at whoorl would be fun too. Just don’t stop!

  28. MommyTime on June 3rd, 2008 8:47 am

How about this? More participants AND the longer writing — courtesy of a sponsorship by some famous salons or products or something? Yeah, my fantasy world is a lovely place… In real life, I think you should do what will make you happiest. I do lurv the writing, though.

  29. andrea on June 3rd, 2008 9:13 am

I agree with Sizzle too. The writing is key but you can probably shorten it a bit to save time. And I agree with those who said that I too learned a lot by your writing about my hair and hair in general. Thanks!

  30. rosalicious on June 3rd, 2008 9:22 am

Keep the writing! Maybe have even MORE writing! Otherwise, it’s just pictures and polls…and anyone can do that.

(Well, not anyone…but you know what I’m sayin’. The commentary is what makes this site uniquely you – and keeps it down to earth and personal. Pictures and polls only would make it seem like a generic site that a company like Vidal Sasson might have.)

  31. Burgh Baby on June 3rd, 2008 10:00 am

What about giving the participants the option? Like, if I want your very valuable and time-intensive commentary, I go on one list. If I just want a quick and dirty couple of pics, poll results, and reader commeents, I go on another. Best of both worlds?

  32. Photographer Lori on June 3rd, 2008 10:02 am

Sorry, babe. It’s your commentary that makes HT great! :)

    LORI

  33. Sarah on June 3rd, 2008 10:19 am

I’m also with Sizzle. More participants, slightly less commentary. Not that I don’t love it the way it is but I’ll take one for the team to get more participants per week.

  34. Miguelina on June 3rd, 2008 10:43 am

In my humble opinion it’s your writing that has us hooked. I can now talk to my hairdresser because I channel you.

Maybe some participants need more commentary than others?

  35. debby on June 3rd, 2008 11:06 am

not only are you hilarious, but some of us need (!!) the commentary so that we know why you’re choosing what you’re choosing. If only we were all gifted with the hair knowledge you share with us each week:)

    Keep it as is!

  36. Elaine on June 3rd, 2008 11:13 am

I agree with having a 3rd option of mostly pictures, some writing. I like the bullet/list format of describing their hair/before picture and think you could easily do that for the recommendations/after as well.

  37. Kait on June 3rd, 2008 11:59 am

I love your commentary, and I think your explanations can help us extrapolate ideas for our own hair even if we don’t get to be HT subjects. It seems like moving forward you might be able to do more shorthand posts by referring back to similar hair dilemmas, so you could keep most commentary but also bump up the numbers for us. No?

  38. Sabrina on June 3rd, 2008 2:15 pm

Sorry, dear, I LOVE reading what you have to say when it comes to hair.

  39. kat on June 3rd, 2008 4:22 pm

i really like seeing what you say since you are the resident expert.

what if people opted in to just have their pictures posted with relevant info and then people could leave comments on what they think? i think most would want to have your comments and a poll – but maybe there are some that just want to throw their photo out there for feedback.

  40. alison on June 3rd, 2008 5:57 pm

i love your writing, however as long as i can get my fix at whoorl.com, then i would be fine with less writing over here. i think the participants might appreciate it, too.

  41. Lisalisa on June 3rd, 2008 11:37 pm

I’m here for the writing. Seriously. The funny, and the instructions. Too little writing and you’d lose me, I fear

  42. allison on June 4th, 2008 6:27 am

Maybe consider the thought that what you are doing is what got so hawt in the first place!? You know, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it? Maybe?

  43. ashley on June 4th, 2008 10:23 am

    Good point, Allison.

I know when it was my turn, all the writing made it SO worth the wait (Plus, I was totally psyched that I got a Loooong response. Yay!)

Write, girl, write. You are a machine. Just get someone to pay for your babysitter so you can attend to tha intranetz.

  44. Callie R. on June 4th, 2008 2:34 pm

    I agree! Compromise!

  45. Carla Hinkle on June 4th, 2008 3:07 pm

I love, love, love the writing. I am always learning stuff about hair. Now, I have not sent my photo in so I’m not waiting for my “turn,” so maybe it’s easy for me to want the writing. (Also it is not me spending the money on the babysitter!) If you need to you can cut back on the writing a wee bit — but please not more.

  46. Anna on June 4th, 2008 4:38 pm

I haven’t been reading long, but I arrived just before you became super-famous.
Please, keep the content! As several other people mentioned, I’ve learned from what you’ve told other people.
(I’ve even started to blow dry my hair!)

  47. Laura on June 4th, 2008 6:02 pm

I voted for “I like it the way it is”, but as long as you keep writing over at Whoorl, I suppooose I could handle less writing here. It would be fun to see more hair.

  48. sunny on June 8th, 2008 3:43 pm

I love your sense of humor so I’m always happy to read your thoughts!

  49. sallysitwell on June 10th, 2008 11:39 pm

I love this site. I just found it and I am reading it obsessively. Who knew I cared that much about hair? Anyway, I like it and (no matter what your format) hope you continue with it. I will click on all your Google ads, I swear! And I added your site to my adblocker’s ‘do not block ads’ list, which puts you on a very short list of ~*~*elite*~*~ websites that I like so much I wouldn’t mind clicking on ad to help out.

  50. Cameron on June 13th, 2008 6:57 pm

Kind of weirds me out that I’m one of only two males (presumably) that is commenting here, but I really enjoy the Whoorl blog entries about parenting and life with Wito. Your stuff cracks me up and my wife and I completely identify with it. I have no interest in Hair Thursday but love your running commentary on parenthood. So if less writing on Hair Thursday means more posts on the Whoorl blog, I’m for less writing on Hair Thursday. You put the “wit” in “Wito.” And, you have just the right amount of urban slang that any self-respecting white woman from affluent OC should have and it’s entertaining!

Go head and chime in...
